Neurontin (Gabapentin) is an anticonvulsive agent with the ability to prevent the development of seizures in patients with epilepsy. Neurontin is produced in capsules. The active ingredient is gabapentin.

Gabapentin is indicated for use in basic therapy, as well as in the combined regimens of epilepsy therapy in adults and adolescents. The drug is effective against resistant epilepsy in children from 8 to 12 years. In addition, the drug is often used to eliminate neuropathic pain of various nature, arising from post herpetic neuralgia, diabetic neuropathy, regional pain syndromes, post-stroke and phantom pain.
Contraindications
It is not allowed to use Neurontin (Gabapentin) in the treatment of patients with individual hypersensitivity to its components, in during pregnancy and lactation. In addition, the drug is not used in the treatment of children under 8 years.
Dosage and reception
Capsules are taken orally, without chewing, after or during meals. The initial dosage for adults and adolescents in the treatment of epilepsy is 300mg of the drug. If necessary, it is possible to increase the daily dose of the drug by 300mg to achieve the required clinical response. The average effective dose varies from 900 to 1800mg of the drug per day.
In severe cases, it is possible to increase the dosage to 3600mg. The initial dose of Neurontin (Gabapentin) for the treatment of children from 8 to 12 years is calculated based on the ratio of 10-15mg per kilogram of child weight per day. In the next three days, the dose of 25 or 30mg per kilogram of body weight per day is divided into 3 doses.
There is a treatment scheme in which the calculation of the dose is based on the actual weight of the patient. If the body weight is 26 to 36kg, then 900mg of the drug is prescribed per day, 37 to 50kg – 1200mg, and if the body weight is more than 50kg, 1800mg of the drug will be indicated per day.
The treatment of neuropathic pain includes the appointment of minimum doses of the drug: 300mg per day with gradual titration to 1800mg, divided into three doses.
